Gerald F. Wald Obituary – 8/24/2019


Gerald Francis Wald, age 83, of Cokato, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, with visitation from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.

Gerald was born Sept. 1, 1935, in Grand Forks, ND, to Joseph and Christine (Klein) Wald. At the age of 6, he attended the Minnesota School for the Deaf in Faribault, where he lived until he graduated in 1955. It was here that he learned the upholstery trade.

Gerald enjoyed working on the farm when he would come home to Crookston.

He was united in marriage to Janet Fletcher Sept. 27, 1958, at St. Lawrence Church in Faribault. This union was blessed with five children. In 1970, they moved their family from Bismarck, ND to Cokato.

Gerald worked at Lundeen Furniture until starting his own business, Wald Upholstery, in 1984. He semi-retired from the business at the age of 65.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, history, watching sports on television, and spending time with his family. Gerald and Janet also took bus tours around the United States, and were active in the deaf community.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Janet; children, Cathy (Randy) Latour, Sharon Wald, Jean Wald, Mary (Mark) Erickson, and Joe (Mary) Wald; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leo (Diane) Wald; and a sister, JoAnne (Larry) Ranum.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Christine Wald.
