Kathryn “Kathy” Van Antwerpen (nee Dembiec), age 72, of Bemidji, put the last stitch into the quilt of her life Jan. 30, 2021.
Kathy was an expert quilter, avid baker, dedicated teddy bear and fabric collector, Girl Scout leader, exceptional gift-giver, enthusiastic Packers fan, and enjoyed a Friday fish fry with a Brandy Manhattan. Above all, she passionately loved her family and was selfless in always making sure they were taken care of.
Kathy was born into this life April 13, 1948, in Milwaukee, WI, to Stanley and Rosemary Dembiec. She was proud of her Polish heritage, eventually living up to her dream of being a Polish grandma. In her younger years, she enjoyed following bands, and even saw the Beatles play.
She met her “Chippy” Ken and they eloped May 20, 1972. They were able to have many adventures together. They accomplished their dream of retiring in northern Wisconsin, where they spent time crafting and woodworking.
Kathy relocated to Bemidji, MN in 2014, where she was able to continue her love of sewing, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 41 years, Ken; and granddaughter, Abigail.
Kathy is survived by her children, Kim (Richard) Sobien, Vince (Shawn) Van Antwerpen, Cory (Ashley) Van Antwerpen, Jen (Chad) Gieser, and Tammie Andrews (Susan Bickett); grandchildren; great-grandchildren; siblings, Mike (Pat) Dembiec, Jeff (Linda) Dembiec, Sharon (Joe) Lazar, and Mary Daniels; sister-in-law, Ruth (Alan) Strekow; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
A private family visitation will take place at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home in Bemidji, MN. Graveside services will take place Saturday, Feb. 6, at Union Grove Cemetery, Harshaw, WI. A celebration of Kathy’s life will be planned for later in 2021.
